CHRISTIAN PRAYERS OF FAITH
The Lutheran Hymnal, Concordia Publishing House, Copyright 1941
(some changes made to more modern language)
General Prayer
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we, Your unworthy servants, do give You most humble and hearty thanks for all Your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men. We praise You for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life, but above all for Your inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And we implore you to give us that due sense of all your mercies that our hearts, may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we may show forth Your praise, not only with our lips but in our lives; that, walking before You in holiness and righteousness all our days, we may enjoy the testimony of a good conscience and the hope of Your favor, to be sustained and comforted under the troubles of this life, and finally be received unto Your everlasting kingdom; through Your infinite mercy in Jesus Christ our Lord.
We offer to You our common supplications for the good estate of Your Church throughout the world, that it may be so guided and governed by the Holy Spirit that all who confess themselves as Christians may be led into the way of truth and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Send down upon all ministers of the Gospel and upon all congregations committed to their charge the healthful Spirit of Your grace, and that they may truly please You, pour upon them the continual dew of Your blessings.
Most heartily we ask You with Your favor to behold the President and Congress of the United States and all others in authority and so to replenish them with Your grace and that they may incline to Your will and to walk in Your way. Prosper all good counsels and all just works that peace and happiness, truth and righteousness, religion and piety, may be established among us throughout all generations.
We humbly entreat You also for all sorts and conditions of men, that You would be pleased to make Your ways known unto them, Your saving grace unto all the nations.
May it please You to preserve all that travel by land or water, to help all that are in peril or need, and to satisfy the wants of all Your creatures.
We also commend to Your fatherly goodness all those who are in any way afflicted or distressed in mind, body, or estate, that it may please You to comfort and relieve them according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings and a happy issue out of all their afflictions.
Hear us, most merciful God, in these our humble requests, which we offer up unto You in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, Our Lord, to whom, with They Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.
O Lord, have mercy upon us.
Be gracious unto us.
Spare us good Lord.
Help us, good Lord;
From all sin, all error, and all evil.
Good Lord, deliver us.
From the crafts and assaults of the devil;
from sudden and evil death;
from pestilence and famine;
from war and bloodshed;
from sedition and rebellion;
from lightning and tempest;
from all calamity by fire and weather;
and from everlasting death.
Help us good Lord;
in all time of our tribulation;
in all time of our prosperity;
in the hour of death;
and in the day of judgment.
Hear us, good Lord:
Rule and govern Your holy Christian Church;
preserve all pastors and ministers of Your Church in the true knowledge and understanding of Your Word and in holiness of life.
To put an end to all schisms and causes of offense;
to bring into the way of truth all such as have erred and are deceived;
to beat down Satan under our feet;
to send faithful laborers into the harvest;
to accompany Your Word with the Spirit and grace;
to raise up them that fall and to strengthen those who do stand;
to comfort and help the weakhearted and the distressed;
We implore, Lord to hear us;
to give all nations peace and concord;
to preserve our country from discord and contention;
to give to our nation; perpetual victory over all its enemies;
to direct our President and all in authority;
and to bless and keep our magistrates and judicial system.
Good Lord, hear us;
help all who are in danger, necessity, and tribulation;
to preserve all women in the perils of childbirth
to strengthen and keep all sick person and young children;
to set free all who are innocently imprisoned;
to defend and provide for all fatherless children and widows;
and to have mercy upon all mankind.
Hear us good Lord.
PSALM Chapter 51
For the choir director; a psalm by David when the prophet Nathan came to him after David's adultery with Bathsheba.
Have pity on me, O God, in keeping with your mercy.
In keeping with your unlimited compassion, wipe out my rebellious acts.
2 Wash me thoroughly from my guilt, and cleanse me from my sin.
3 I admit that I am rebellious. My sin is always in front of me.
4 I have sinned against you, especially you. I have done what you consider evil. So you hand down justice when you speak, and you are blameless when you judge.
5 Indeed, I was born guilty. I was a sinner when my mother conceived me.
6 Yet, you desire truth and sincerity. Deep down inside me you teach me wisdom. 7 Purify me from sin with hyssop, and I will be clean. Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8 Let me hear {sounds of} joy and gladness. Let the bones that you have broken dance.
9 Hide your face from my sins, and wipe out all that I have done wrong.
10 Create a clean heart in me, O God, and renew a faithful spirit within me.
11 Do not force me away from your presence, and do not take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore the joy of your salvation to me, and provide me with a spirit of willing obedience.
13 {Then} I will teach your ways to those who are rebellious, and sinners will return to you.
14 Rescue me from the guilt of murder, O God, my savior. Let my tongue sing joyfully about your righteousness!
15 O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will tell about your praise.
16 You are not happy with any sacrifice. Otherwise, I would offer one {to you}. You are not pleased with burnt offerings.
17 The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit. O God, you do not despise a broken and sorrowful heart.
18 Favor Zion with your goodness. Rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will be pleased with sacrifices offered in the right spirit— with burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings. Young bulls will be offered on your altar.
Psalms 51:1-19 (GW)
O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed, give unto Your servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey Your commandments, and also that we, being defended by Your from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ, Our Savior. AMEN
O Lord, let us pray for all in authority and especially the government of the United States, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in godliness and honesty. O merciful Father in heaven, who holds in Your hand all the might of man and who has ordained the powers that be for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well, and of whom is all rule and authority in the kingdoms of the world, we humbly beseech You, graciously regard the President of the United States, The Governors, and all the rulers of the earth, that all who receive the sword as Your ministers may bear it according to Your commandment; through Christ our Lord. AMEN
Lord, we pray that You would deliver the world from all error, take away disease, ward off famine, set free all those who are in chains and bondage, grant a safe return to the wayward, health to sick and to our mariners a harbor of security.
Almighty and everlasting God, the consolation of the sorrowful and the strength of the weak, may the prayers of them that in any tribulation or distress cry unto You graciously come before You, so that in all their necessities they mark and receive Your manifold help and comfort; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN
Almighty and everlasting God, King of Glory, and Lord of heaven and earth; by whose Spirit all things are governed, by whose providence all things are ordered, who art the God of peace and the Author of all, grant us, we implore You, Your heavenly peace and concord that we may serve You in true fear, to the praise and glory of Your name, through Christ, our Lord. AMEN
O almighty, everlasting God, who through Thine only Son, our blessed Lord, has commanded us to love our enemies, to do good to them that hate us, and to pray for them that persecute us, we earnestly implore You by Your gracious visitation all our enemies may be led to true repentance and may have the same love and be of lone accord and of one mind and heart with us and Your whole Christian Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN
Almighty and everlasting God, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth, we implore Your glorious majesty, through Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior, impart the grace and help of the Holy Spirit to all ministers of the Word that they may purely teach it to the saving of men. Bring to naught by Your almighty power and unsearchable wisdom all the counsels of those who hate Your Word, and by who, by corrupt teaching or with violent hands, would destroy it, and enlighten them with the knowledge of Your glory, that we, leading a quiet and peaceable life, may by a pure faith learn the riches of Your heavenly grace and in holiness and righteousness serve You, the only true God; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. AMEN
Almighty, everlasting God, the eternal Salvation of them that believe, hear our prayers in behalf of Your servants who are sick, for whom we implore the aid of Your mercy, that, being restored t health, they may render thanks to You in Your Church, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. AMEN
O Lord, look down from heaven, behold, visit, and relieve Your servants for whom we make supplications; look upon them with the eyes of mercy; give them comfort and sure confidence in You, defend them from the danger of the enemy, and keep them in perpetual peace and safety; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. AMEN
Enlighten our minds O God, by the Spirit which proceeds from You, that as Your Son has promised, we may be led into all truth; through Jesus Christ. AMEN
Almighty God, who has given us Your only begotten Son to take our nature upon Him, grant, that we, being regenerate and made Your children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by Your Holy Spirit; through Jesus Christ. AMEN
O God who through the grace of the Holy Spirit, does pour the gifts of charity into the hearts of Your faithful people, grant unto Your servants health of both mind and body, that they may love You with their whole strength and with their whole heart perform those things which are pleasing unto You, through Christ Jesus, Your Son. AMEN
Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness and put upon ourselves the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which Your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility, that in the Last Day, when He will come again in His glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead; we may rise to life immortal.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN
