THE JEWISH ROOTS OF CHRISTIANITY
ARC OF THE COVENANT
TORAH SCROLL
The Jewish Roots of Christianity
Every one of us lives in culture. God designed it that way knowing that every nation would have some who would come to believe in Him. He knew that each one of them would worship and praise Him in their own way. We do have the Old Testament to give us some insight into how Moses was to set up the tabernacle, what elements were to be used, and what method to use. But as Jesus said to the Samaritan woman at the well the day will come when you will not worship in any one place, but you will worship in spirit and in truth. She went back to her village and told the people about Jesus. Jesus had crossed cultural boundaries by speaking to her, being both a woman and a Samaritan. But Paul did that also when he was called to reach the Gentiles. He would have faced many circumstances that would not be kosher, and that would have defiled him. He was willing to leave the traditions and the law behind as he went about doing the work that the Lord asked him to. He had come to an understanding that neither the law nor the traditions made by men could ever bring salvation. They were never meant to. They did bring blessings instead of cursings. Some defilement meant that the person was unclean until evening or for a few days. Animal sacrifice could only cover sins for a period of time. They were looking forward to the day when the final sacrifice would be made.
The path to salvation is the same for everyone. God has made it clear that there is only one way. There was no man who could save themselves nor bring proper payment for all sins for the world. The people who have lived before the Savior, Jesus Christ, came on the scene looked forward to the coming Messiah; the one who would take away all sin. Those who have lived since Christ came into the world and made the sacrifice for all sin, are able to look back to who He was and the final accomplishment that was made for all mankind. He paid for the sins of both those who lived from before Christ and those who lived, are currently living, or have yet to live after His death and resurrection.
I recently watched an interview with three Jewish believers who live in Israel, hosted by the ‘Day of Discovery’. The discussion pursued about how we are to live our daily lives and how we are to worship and honor the Lord our God. Does every believer have to worship in the spirit and tradition of the culture of the Jews? Yeshua (Jesus) fulfilled all the feasts or will fulfill them all. He was the perfect Passover. They understood that the rabbinic commentaries were manmade. We should appreciate our Jewish roots. When we pray ‘your will be done on earth as it is heaven’ how do we know what to do and how are Jewish people to live on earth in God’s will? We have our Bible because the Jews were faithful to preserve God’s Words down through history. Reading Scripture, receiving a teaching, and serving the poor is all out of Jewish culture. We each have our own culture and we view other cultures out of it. We owe much to Israel, God’s chosen people. God used them in a very special way and still uses them as examples. But God’s feasts were not just for Israel, they are not Israel’s feasts but are God’s appointed times. (Lev 23, Zech 14 -use the Bible search tool at the bottom of the page). There is no rule that we have to keep the feast, or that we couldn’t do it in a more Christian way, but that God looks upon the heart of the worshipper. (1 Thess, 2 Thess.) We should each do what as we are moved to by the Holy Spirit. We who believe have been completed in Christ because of what He did, not over anything we can accomplish. We need to find a balance between the teachings of the Old Covenant (Testament) and the New Covenant. We have freedom to express our faith in God. We do worship in various ways when we have different seasons of our life, in good times and in bad. The Psalms are full of anguish and of great joy. It all brings forth a worship and honor of God. It is good to acknowledge the feasts and festivals that God set up. They are a pattern of the history of the earth from beginning to end. We have seen all the spring feasts completed in Jesus and so we can learn about our Savior, the Messiah, through them. We could also study the fall feasts and know about the end of the world and about Yeshua (Jesus’) return. By celebrating these feasts each year we are bringing to our remembrance that God has set times in place for the end of the world. Our faith is to give God the glory for then it is acceptable and will be a sweet aroma before the Lord.
God created both Jew and Gentile with differences; two branches that He has put together in one tree. (Col 2:16) God accepts both of us, but only if our hearts are pure and we truly honor Him with our heart.
